The Purpose of Purposeful Entities in Purposive Systems:

Harish's avatarHarish's Notebook - My notes... Lean, Cybernetics, Quality & Data Science.

In today’s post, I am looking at the idea of “purposeful” versus “purposive” in Systems Thinking. The two words are based on “purpose”. “Purposeful” means that the entity is autonomous and has freedom of choice. The entity is free to make their own rules, as the term “auto-nomous” means. “Purposive” on the other hand implies that the entity’s purpose is chosen by somebody else, and they do not have the freedom to make choices. I am very interested in the differences between purposeful and purposive, and very fascinated by the implication of purposeful entities in a “system”. If the purposeful entities are able to be autonomous, then the traditional viewpoints of systems thinking must be reevaluated. By “traditional systems thinking”, I am referring to the hard systems approach. This is the notion that there are real systems out there in the world that can be objectively modeled or designed where…

Having the privilege of working in software in the 2020s, I hear variations on the following ideas expressed frequently:

  • ‘There must be some direct relationship between your work and customer value!’
  • ‘The results of your actions must be measurable!’

These ideas manifest in statements like this, which sound very sensible and plausible:

  • ‘This does not benefit the customer. This is not a feature to the customer. So we should not do it.’
  • ‘We are not in the business of doing X, so should not focus on it. We are in the business of serving the customer’
  • ‘This does not improve any of the key metrics we identified’

I want to challenge these ideas. In fact, I want to turn them on their head:

  • Many peoples’ work generate value by focussing on things that appear to have no measurable or apparently justifiable customer benefit.
  • Moreover, judgements on these matters are what…

Message from CWIST:
We are pleased to invite you to our second in our series ‘Through Her Eyes’ (a CWiST Offering), in dialogue with Helen Sanson. Join us as we learn from Helen’s journey into Awareness Based Systems Thinking and gain an insight into her work with generative conversations.

About Helen
Helen is the founder of Forcera CIC, a consultancy that aims for change by using her passion for learning, systems and complexity thinking to build capacity and foster agency for social transformation and impact whilst appreciating the practical challenges. She believes in exploring ways to make power inclusive, so people’s voices are part of the decision-making process and they belong. Her interests lie in how societal structures and systems exacerbate existing inequalities by conceptualising how they occur to create social change. She brings various skills and experiences, including lived, to empower organisations and individuals through awareness-based systems thinking based on social science, active learning and participatory approaches. She enjoys facilitating space for engaging in generative conversations that explore the complexities of wicked problems that create uncertainties by reframing frustrations and disrupting issues to realise new ways of thinking, seeing, doing and being and reaching the root cause.

The games we play: critical complexity improves machine learning

cxdig's avatarComplexity Digest

Abeba Birhane, David J. T. Sumpter
When mathematical modelling is applied to capture a complex system, multiple models are often created that characterize different aspects of that system. Often, a model at one level will produce a prediction which is contradictory at another level but both models are accepted because they are both useful. Rather than aiming to build a single unified model of a complex system, the modeller acknowledges the infinity of ways of capturing the system of interest, while offering their own specific insight. We refer to this pragmatic applied approach to complex systems — one which acknowledges that they are incompressible, dynamic, nonlinear, historical, contextual, and value-laden — as Open Machine Learning (Open ML). In this paper we define Open ML and contrast it with some of the grand narratives of ML of two forms: 1) Closed ML, ML which emphasizes learning with minimal human input (e.g…

Safer Complex Systems case study launch – Royal Academy of Engineering – 25 May 2022, 1pm UK time online

Safer Complex Systems case study launch25 May 2022, 1:00pm – 2:30pmONLINE – via ZoomAdd to CalendarPUBLIC EVENTRegister The Safer Complex Systems programme commissioned 18 Awardees to develop case studies that examine complex system successes and failures, in order to address a gap in materials available for engineering education and professional development relevant to achieving safer complex systems. The case studies explore how a specific approach to the design, management or governance of a complex system has resulted in safe or unsafe outcomes. This online event will showcase the work of our Awardees, which ranged from dynamic cycling transport systems in Colombia, to climate change in the Netherlands, to nursing home failures in Australia, to emergent fire risk in South Africa and train derailments in the UK. Following this event, the case studies will be available in full on the Engineering X website.Safer Complex Systems is one of five missions being pursued by Engineering X, an international collaboration co-founded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

And

Operational Research (OR) Society 64th annual conference

We also want to inform you and invite you to submit to the Operational Research (OR) Society annual conference physically at University of Warwick on 13-15th September 2022. The Systems Thinking steam has been the largest stream the last couple of years with 60+ presenters in parallel sessions and 1-3 hour interactive workshops.

There is no requirement to produce a written paper – just an abstract (maximum 300 words) describing your presentation, which will be published in the program. The closing date for abstracts is 30 June 2022. Everything you need to know about the event (venue, travel arrangements, accommodation, price, critical dates, requirements of presenters, etc.) can be found on the conference web site, where you can also sign up and submit abstracts: https://theorsociety.eventsair.com/or64-annual-conference/.

The Systems Thinking Stream:

There will be practitioner and academic stream keynotes, and Dan McGonigle (Head of the Systems Group in Defra) will be a plenary speaker for the whole conference, talking about the use of systems thinking in UK government.

For presentations in the stream, we welcome the widest possible diversity of practitioners and academics, whatever specialism you bring.

We encourage the submission of abstracts discussing:

Applications to (and across) organizational, social and environmental issues;
Theoretical and methodological innovations;
Thoughts on the diversity, impacts and ethics of systemic OR practice; and
Reflections on the past, present and future of systems thinking in OR.
Indeed, any insightful presentation of relevance to systems thinking and OR is very welcome. If you have any questions about the focus of your abstract and presentation, please write to g.r.midgley@hull.ac.uk (there is another email address further down this message if you have more general questions about the conference).

We have also been asked to look out for people who can offer experiential workshops (e.g., giving practical experiences of using a systems approach) in the Impact stream. If you think your work would fit in this category, and can facilitate a workshop lasting between 1-3 hours, please let us know by email before uploading your abstract. You can write to Sadaf Salavati – sadaf.salavati@lnu.se – about interactive workshops.

The Viable Systems Model and human systems dynamics through the lens of Barry Oshry’s Organic Systems Model
14th Metaphorum Conference, Leuven, Belgium, 10-12 June 2022 NB I am still trying to confirm travel arrangements so I can attend this amazing conference.
The VSM is undoubtedly about people in organisation, at heart, and I consider it to represent some of the most essential, fundamental aspects of organisation. But not all. Long before I encountered Beer’s work, I was engaged in studying Barry Oshry’s power+systems framework, now called the organic systems model. Developed from extended observation of experiential workshops, this framework identifies sensemaking ‘worlds’ – Top, Middle, Bottom, Customer, Helper, Dominant, Other – ‘real’ conditions which seem to inevitably pertain in different relationships to responsibility, authority, and decision-making – and instinctive human responses to those conditions, which both exacerbate the conditions and create problematic human dynamics within and between the worlds which persistently shift people out of partnership – a shared focus on what we collectively value.

Workshop: Systems thinking and systems convening for carbon capture – advanced workshop
June 14th 2-6pm UK time – the Systems Change Alliance
This workshop will work dynamically to deepen an understanding of what systems thinking can offer for the changes we are seeking.
Book at: https://systemschangealliance.org/events-calendar/systems-thinking-and-systems-convening-for-carbon-capture/ (paid)

Systems leadership, change, theory, and practice
Mon 11 July 2022 18:30–20:30 UK time, SCiO Virtual Open Meeting – July 2022
Systems Leadership and Systems Change are very popular phrases at the moment – search the web for a sense (and sense Medium.com if you really want to boggle your mind).
Some of it is really good, some of it is risible, and much has little to do with systems thinking or systems practice.
This session will explore some of the existing territory and dimensions and sketch out Benjamin’s approach.
Benjamin will draw on two of his articles from last year (but reading them isn’t necessary to attend): https://i2insights.org/2021/06/22/systems-leadership/ and https://stream.syscoi.com/2021/06/21/a-schema-for-better-understanding-systems-leadership-and-systems-change/
